When the young horse Daisy May came to us, she was pregnant 怀孕的. With no related experience, I was unprepared for what might come next.

After some difficulty, Daisy’s baby was born. I heard a gurgling noise. I couldn’t believe that baby was breathing and blinking his big brown eyes at me! We called him Samson, and of course I became his mother as much as Daisy was. I prepared to bottle feed him, but Samson quickly found his natural food source. Thank God! This new mother was going to stay with her baby.

Samson has grown up surrounded with loving companions. I had to separate Daisy and Samson for a few hours a day when he was nine months old to wean 使……断奶 him, but otherwise he goes wherever she does. I think she would be lost without him. His horse stepdad Bernard taught him to always be ready to have fun. They enjoy playing football together and going for a roll on a hot summer day.

I asked a worker to make a harness 马具 for my three little horses. When I brought it home I taught them one by one how to pull a cart. Samson watched and freely followed Daisy. When he was three, I put the harness on him and he knew exactly what to do.

The most exciting thing about Samson is that he has become a little famous for his talents. Last winter, I wondered how Samson would feel about dragging a plastic sled behind him with me sitting on it. No problem at all we moved smoothly across the snow.

People came from all over to see him perform.

Ali and his younger sister, Zahra, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was very unfriendly to them.

One day, Ali took Zahras shoes to a shoe repairman to have them fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasnt until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Zahra agreed and the two decided to share Alis running shoes, Zahras school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Ali. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Ali often arrived late and was warned by the school.

Ali heard about a long distance race that would be held for the boys in the city. When he learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win the new shoes.

The day of the race arrived. Ali had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted, he thought only of Zahra and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. A light knock on the door brought me from my kitchen. Because we had just moved into the neighbourhood, I couldn’t imagine who it would be. Opening the door, an old man stood there, who was dressed in dirty clothing and wearing dirty rubber boots. His hand hung a plastic bag.

“Can I help you?” I asked.

“Would you like to buy some fresh garden vegetables?” His blue eyes were hopeful.

“Are they from your garden?” I looked inside his plastic bag and saw some carrots with soil.

“Yes,” His voice was soft. “And I can get some apples from a tree in my yard. Would you like some of those, too?”

My heart softened, and I wondered if he is badly in need of the bit of money. With a sigh, I said, “Please step inside and I’ll get my money.”

The next day, he knocked at our door again. This time, my little four year old daughter got there first. “Oh, hello. Would you like to come in for tea?" Without a second thought, the old man stepped inside and held out a broken basket with several bruised 擦伤的apples. “From my tree,” he said, removing a worn cap. “You might like to make a pie. ”

The three of us sat at the kitchen table and drank our tea. It was obvious that my daughter liked hosting a visitor in her never ending questions. “What is your name? Where do you live? Why are your clothes so dirty?”

The homeless looking man laughed as he answered each question. His name was Mr. Locket and he lived around the corner. His wife had passed away several years before, and his children all lived far away. He was lonely. His need for company had sent him door to door selling fruit and vegetables. Ours was the only door opened to him that day.

One day, when we got back home after work, my ten year old daughter, Becky and Joe were united in their desire for a dog. As for me, I shared none of theirs. But why, they pleaded恳求. “Because I don’t have time to take care of a dog.” “But we’ll do it.” “Really? You’re going to walk the dog? Feed the dog? Bathe the dog?” “Yes, yes, and yes. ” “I don’t believe you.” “We will. We promise.”They didn’t. Everyone wanted to walk the cute dog that first day. From day two, neither thought to walk the dog. While I was slow to accept that I would be the one to keep track of her shots, to feed and clean her, Misty knew this on day one. As she looked up at the three new humans in her life, she calculated, “The medium one is the most reliable.”Quickly, she and I developed something very similar to a Vulcan mind meld心灵相通. She’d look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, send her need, and then wait, trusting I would understand—which, strangely, I almost always did. In no time, she would extend across my stomach as I watched television, and snored on my home office couch as I worked on my design.Even so, part of me continued to reject walking duty, Joe and Becky had promised. “Not fair”, I said to myself as she and I walked. “Not fair,” I’d loudly remind anyone within earshot upon our return home.In September, 2008, the Great Depression hit the Arizona. With that, my husband and I were both laid off overnight. During the following six months, Joe and I hurriedly rushed here and there to seek a new job, doing anything and everything we could to request employment. Every part of my life changed; no part of my old routine remained. However, Misty still needed walking.注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;2. 至少使用五个短文中标有下划线的关键词语;3. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好;4. 续写完成后,请用下划线标出你所使用的关键词语。Paragraph 1:Upset as I was, I had to walk Misty while looking for a job. “Im going to miss you so much, Poppy, "said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions情绪get the better of him.

His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.

The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile.” I guess this is it, “he said.” Ill see you back home in a month, okay?"His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boys mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.”

The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didnt seem interested in her dinner, her favorite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didnt.

They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasnt her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. "What should we do to cheer Poppy up?"asked Dad. “Weve tried everything.”

“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy, “smiled Mom.” Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Lets get a little dog for Poppy."

It didnt take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging摆动ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

It was the hottest time of the year in southern California. Steve, a star basketball player at the University of California, with his cousin Zach, had planned a camping trip in the Great National Forest for their summer vacation.

The boys gathered clothes and supplies, and began their great adventure with Brady the dog early in the morning. Upon arrival, Steve pulled over to the side of the road along the bank of the river. "A wonderful place for fishing," Steve exclaimed in delight. Zach nodded in agreement.

At high noon, the sun was scorching hot. With a good harvest of fish, the boys marched into the forest with Brady following them. After a long walk, they found a clearing that was ideal for a campsite. The camp was set up immediately as Steve knew all the tricks of an experienced wilderness camper.

An afternoon nap was absolutely a special treat in mid summer. However, the boys were waken up by the fierce barks of Brady. Outside, heavy smoke filled the air and wind blown flame was skipping from the top of one tree to another. The long dry summer turned the forest into a tinderbox. In a little while, Steve and Zach were inside their tent packing their belongings.

“Lets go! We can make it back to the river!" They headed down against the fire wind in the direction of the river. But Brady barked a sharp warming. Ahead of them lay a thick curtain of smoke across the track. They would never make it through that. Steve was uneasy for it was hard to find a safe way to escape in the heavy smoke.

Brady lifted his head and snuffed(嗅)the smoke laden wind. Next moment, the dog bounded away and disappeared down a sharp slope(坡). The boys shouted for him, but he didnt come back. Steve couldnt blame Brady for panicking. He himself wanted to run even though he didnt have a clue which way.

Paragraph 1:

Steve and Zach hadn`t gone far when there was a familiar bark.

Paragraph 2:

Brady pulled again, in spite of the boys disbelief, urgently.
